Federal Skilled Worker Program in Canada

The Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) is one of three schemes within Canada’s Express Entry system for processing immigration requests. It permits applicants with international job skills and no relationship to Canada to apply for permanent residency.

The Federal Skilled Worker program is not just a pathway to Canada, but a significant opportunity for experienced professionals worldwide. It offers a chance to contribute to your field of expertise and build a promising future in Canada.

Meaning Of Federal Skilled Worker Program

The Federal Skilled Worker program operates under the Express Entry system, utilizing the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to fairly and transparently assess applicants seeking permanent residency in Canada. Unlike Canadian Experience Class (CEC) applicants, Federal Skilled Workers are not required to have job experience in Canada to enter the Express Entry pool. Instead, applicants need to meet the minimum points threshold, which is determined by factors such as job skills, language proficiency, and education. Once in the pool, candidates with the highest competitive Comprehensive Ranking System points will receive an invitation to apply for permanent residence in Canada.

Who Is Qualified For The Federal Skilled Worker Program?

Eligibility for the Federal Skilled Worker program is based on specific criteria. These include a certain number of years of skilled work experience, a minimum education level, and proficiency in English or French.

Employment Skill

  • A minimum of one year of steady, full-time, experienced job skill included within the past ten years or an equivalent amount of part-time skill.
  • Skilled work proficiency has to do with proficiency categorized under NOC TEER 0,1,2 or 3.

Language Skill

  • Get to a least Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level 7 on an endorsed English or French language exam.

Education

  • A minimum of a high school in Canada or the equivalent in international education.

Financial Assistance

  • Sufficient funds to assist themselves and any partner or kids in their settlement in Canada.

Residence in Canada

  • It is required to plan to settle outside of the Quebec region.

Suppose an applicant satisfies the conditions mentioned above. In that case, they must also indicate that they score at least 67 out of 100 points on the Federal Skilled Worker qualification scores grid.

If applicants satisfy these conditions, they will be qualified to present an Express Entry profile for the program. Hence, applicants must understand that they must fulfil Canada’s fundamental admissibility conditions. Specific criminal violations and medical requirements may make an individual inadmissible to Canada.

How To Apply Under The Federal Skilled Worker Program

Applying for the Federal Skilled Worker program involves submitting an Express Entry profile to Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). It’s important to note that this does not guarantee Canadian permanent residence. Only after submitting an Express Entry profile will an applicant be assigned a Comprehensive Ranking System point and considered in future Express Entry draws for an Invitation to Apply for permanent status.

When presenting your Express Entry profile, a Federal Skilled Worker program applicant will be required to offer the following documents:

Educational Credential Assessment (ECA)

To assert scores for education, a Federal Skilled Worker program applicant must offer an authentic Educational Credentials Assessment report affirming the worth of international education by Canadian measures. Five institutions in Canada are endorsed to provide Educational Credential Assessment reports. This is optional for academic certificates obtained from an academic institution in Canada.

Language Skill Test Results

Under the Express Entry schemes, applicants must offer results from endorsed language exams obtained within the past two years. Authorized exams for English include the IELTS test and the CELPIP test (only obtainable in Canada). Authorized exams for French include the Test d’Evaluation de Francais (TEF) and TCF Canada.

Identification Documents

Applicants will need to provide details from their identification documents. Ideally, applicants and all supporting family members must have authentic travel passports.

If an applicant successfully gets an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence in Canada, they will proceed to the next step of the application procedure. In this step, the candidate will have 60 days to prepare and present an electronic Application for Permanent Residence, which demands additional documentation.

Since the Express Entry system was introduced in 2015, the lowest-rated Federal Skilled Worker applicants to get an Invitation to Apply have a Comprehensive Ranking System score of 413. If a candidate’s Comprehensive Ranking System score is lower than this, they must actively seek alternatives to enhance their points.

Processing Time For Federal Skilled Worker Application

A Federal Skilled Worker program Express Entry profile will stay authentic in the pool of applicants for one year. If you get an Invitation to Apply (ITA) when in the pool of applicants, you will have 60 days to present a complete application and documentation to the Canadian government.

The processing duration for Express Entry applications is six months from when the Canadian administration receives the application to the provision of a permanent residence visa.

Supporting aspects may impact your processing time, which has to do with the following:

  • The complicatedness or conclusion of your application
  • The simplicity with which the official can verify the details offered in your application.
  • Attaching an extra family member to your application.
